In this unique period and historical change, the geosciences play a fundamental role in supporting the energy transition and ensuring a sustainable future.
Today more than ever, the main challenge is to find the right balance between meeting the growing global demand for energy and doing so in a sustainable way that reduces direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions.
This session focuses on the critical role of energetic geo-resources, and subsurface storage in enabling a low-carbon and resilient energy future and contributing to the transition through a cleaner energy mix.
Key topics include the exploration, exploitation and storage methods of geo-resources such as geothermal systems, natural hydrogen and other types of subsurface geo-resources useful for energy production.
Exploration techniques will focus on innovative geological and geophysical approaches to identifying and assessing these resources; exploitation practices will address sustainable methods for their extraction and utilization, ensuring minimal or zero environmental impact.
The session will also cover storage techniques which are essential to ensure the long-term viability and stability of these resources as heat and hydrogen storage. The session will also highlight advances in carbon capture and storage solutions including subsurface storage in saline aquifers or depleted oil and gas fields, and CO2 mineralization.
